DHAKA, (Xinhua) — At least one female is dead and dozens of people are missing after a ferry capsized in the river of Kumar in Bangladesh’s central Madaripur district, some 63 km south of capital Dhaka, on Thursday night.
A fire service official told Xinhua that the ferry carrying some 100 passengers sank at about 8:00 p.m. local time Thursday when it collided head-on with a vessel.
“The female, one of scores of people who swam to shore when the ferry sank, died later in the hospital, ” said the official.
He said rescue efforts and a search for the missing are under way by the Fire Service and Civil Defence authorities.
Ferry and boat disasters are common in Bangladesh, which is crisscrossed by about 250 rivers. Ferry is still a key means of transport in the country, most of them are often overcrowded. Enditem
